Egypt’s Pathfinder Energy Group has joined hands with  the Jordan’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and East Gas Company to establish electric vehicle charging stations in Jordan, powered by green energy.

To this end, Pathfinder has formed partnerships with UK’s Dunhill Ventures and U.S.-based SSK Capital Investments.

As per Maii Elzomar,  VP, Pathfinder Energy Group, the project will establish 500 charging stations at a total investment of $470 million.

“We begin implementing the project by end-2023 and complete within three years over three phases. The first phase comprises 120 charging points,” he said.

The project aims to install EV charging stations powered by a mix of solar and wind energy, said the firm.  Jordan’s high uptake of passenger EVs can be attributed to reduced import taxes, the arrival of new affordable Chinese models and high fuel prices.

It may be noted that Jordan is taking efforts to popularise EVs in the country. To this end, Jordan has reduced the import duties on EVs from 25 to 10 per cent, which is  lower than import duties imposed on hybrids and gasoline cars, which currently stand at 55 per cent and 86 per cent, respectively.

As per reports,  the majority of consumers in Jordan prefer affordable vehicle models. It showed that imports of used vehicles account for 70 per cent of total imported vehicles in Jordan, compared to new vehicles, which make up only 20 per cent.

Moreover, there are currently 13 different Chinese brands in Jordan that comprise 40 per cent of the local market share.
