Oman’s Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) has plans to set up a 100 MW solar plant with an energy storage facility in the north of the sultanate and also has plans to build its first wind farm.

The proposed  hybrid project will be built in the Northern part of the Block 6 concession and will be PDO’s second utility-scale solar project and Oman’s first solar-plus-storage facility.

The firm  said in its recent Sustainability Report, that the  solar park would accommodate  additional 30-MW battery storage system charged by an additional solar capacity in order to  maintain PDO grid stability and safeguard power distribution.

It may be noted that the 100-MW Amin photovoltaic power plant which went online in 2020 at PDO’s oilfield concession in south Oman has  produced more than 340 TWh of power, saving 95.5 million cubic metres of gas.

PDO said in a new report  that a Request for Proposals (RFP) for two wind power projects, each of about 100 MW capacity, will be floated this year. “Plans for the two wind farms, dubbed ‘Riyah-1 and Riyah-2, were given green signals following the completion of a feasibility study and site measurement campaign that had concluded that PDO’S concession had “excellent wind potential with an average speed of 8 metres/second”. While Riyah-1 is targeted for completion by Q2 2026, Riyah-2 is expected to be ready by Q4 2026,” said the firm in the report.

“The project is a first of its kind and will produce and channel green electricity to cover the airports’ electrical load during the daytime. It will boast a total installed capacity of 609 kw,” the firm stated.
