With the goal to get support for the initiatives launched by the Ministry of Transport and Communications and Information Technology (MOTCIT) to switch to environmentally friendly electric vehicles (EV), the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MOHT) has invited partners and stakeholders in the tourism sector.

As per reports, the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology (MOTCIT) launched a special programme to reduce carbon emissions in the transportation sector and communications, and information technology sectors, which contributes  nearly 20 per cent of the total carbon emissions in the Sultanate of Oman.

The Ministry has divided its plan for zero carbon neutrality into three stages — the first stage (reducing emissions by three per cent by 2030), the second stage (reducing emissions by 34 per cent by 2040), and the third stage (reducing emissions by 100 per cent by 2050).

As per the plans the Ministry seeks to reach 7,000 electric cars, or 35 per cent of the new light vehicles, and reduce emissions by 40 per cent from heavy equipment using dual combustion technology.

A study published by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), UNEP, and the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) in 2008 indicated that Travel and tourism-associated greenhouse gas emissions were estimated to be around 5 per cent (1304 Mt) of global emissions in 2005.

The data include the emissions of three industries, namely transportation, accommodation, and other Travel and tourism activities, with transport generating 75 per cent and accommodations generating 21 per cent of the overall emissions of the sector, including transport-related GHG emissions.
