Lebanon to Get a Gift of 500 MW in Alternative Energy from Qatar

The Qatari Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Saad bin Sherida Al-Kaabi, has disclosed that in partnership with French firm Total Energies, it is ready to provide Lebanon with three alternative energy plants with a production capacity of 500 megawatts.

Al-Kaabi said that this would be in a form of a gift with soft conditions. Lebanon will have to do provide the necessary land plots to implement the project. The Lebanese authorities will choose their locations according to their priorities and need.

It may be noted that Lebanon has set an ambitious target to cover 30% of its energy consumption from renewables by 2030. This target reflects the nation’s determination to transition toward cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.

Moreover, a study conducted by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in collaboration with Lebanon’s Ministry of Energy and Water (MEW) and the Lebanese Centre for Energy Conservation (LCEC) examined the challenges and opportunities related to achieving this goal. As per the study,  Lebanon could realistically and cost-effectively obtain 30% of its electricity supply from renewables by 2030. This ambitious target builds upon the current goal of generating 12% of the nation’s electricity and heat from renewable sources within a year.

The recent approval of the Renewable Energy Law, earlier this year, by the Finance Committee further underscores Lebanon’s commitment to cleaner energy. The law is said to be crucial to Lebanon’s commitment to securing 30 percent of its total electricity consumption from renewable energy sources by 2030.

Moreover, this law lays the foundation for enhancing distributed renewable energy production solely through implementing critical principles for project execution using net metering in all its forms, as well as direct power purchase agreements for renewable energy.
