  • Goldwind held that the agreement with Masdar will see the supply of the turbines to the Zarafshan wind farm in the Navoi region in central Uzbekistan.
  • Once built and in operation, the 500MW wind energy project will power 500,000 Uzbekistan households and displace about 1.1 million tons of carbon dioxide every year.

Chinese multinational wind turbine manufacturer Goldwind has announced that it has secured a novel deal with Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company) for the supply of 111 units of GW155-4.5MW turbines. The turbines will be supplied for the largest of its kind project in Uzbekistan and Central Asia.

Goldwind held that the agreement with Masdar will see the supply of the turbines to the Zarafshan wind farm in the Navoi region in central Uzbekistan. It said that the delivery is scheduled to be started in the third quarter of 2022 and completed by the end of 2024. Once built and in operation the wind energy project will power 500,000 Uzbekistan households and displace about 1.1 million tons of carbon dioxide every year.

The official statement of Goldwind mentioned that the RE project will help Uzbekistan achieve the goal of increasing the proportion of green electricity to 25% by 2030.

Sun Lianhua, General Manager of Goldwind’s Central Asia Russian-Speaking Region, said that Uzbekistan is a pivotal country and geographic center in Central Asia with abundant wind resources. “The Zarafshan 500MW wind project is a milestone project for Goldwind to promote China’s foreignization of wind power, which will make positive contributions to Uzbekistan’s energy transition and create a new model of China-Uzbekistan green ‘Belt and Road’ cooperation,” Lianhua added.

Under the ‘2020-2030 Energy and Power Strategic Plan,’ the RE development in Uzbekistan is accelerating and the country has become a hot spot for clean energy investments. Goldwind entered the market through a 750kW wind power project in Uzbekistan in 2012.

Last month, Masdar said in Tashkent that it achieved financial close on the 500 MW Zarafshan wind project as the project is expected to attract foreign direct investment of more than $600 million.

Saudi Arabia based ACWA Power also a Heads of Terms (HoT) agreement with Uzbekistan government for the development of a 1500 MW wind energy project.
