Israel, Jordan and the UAE have entered into an agreement on a pact initiated by the UAE a year ago. The MoU is about a project called Project Prosperity.

Project Prosperity

Project Prosperity entails two components, namely, Prosperity Green and Prosperity Blue.

Prosperity Green is for a 600 MW solar photovoltaic plant along with electric storage. Under the project, light will be transformed into electricity. The project will be established in Jordan and will help generate clean energy for export to Israel.

Prosperity Blue, on the other hand, is aimed at a sustainable water desalination plant to come up in Israel.  This initiative will facilitate exportinf portable water to Jordan. 200 million cubic metres of water will be exported annually under the contract.

Project Prosperity was first introduced to deal with challenges  that spring from climate change with respect to water and energy security in the Middle East. It is also aimed at encouraging the use of renewable energy, sustainable water supply, and stability in the Middle East.

The UAE, Israel and Jordan had joined hands for partnership with Dubai Expo serving as the platform for the exchange last year. The UAE, Jordan, and Israel are slated to continue their cooperation to develop plans before for COP28, which will be organised in Emirates in November 2023.

Desalination Agenda on COP27 Table

At COP27, water security was a widely-discussed subject and desalination was an important of it. Egypt was at the forefront of this discussion, which does not come as a surprise since the country is looking to augment its desalination capacity and aims to quadruple capacity by setting up 17 new desalination plants in the span of the next five years.

Notably, the conference centre at is operated with the use of water filtered with the use of desalination technology.
