As the biggest sporting event on earth gets underway, Qatar draws attention to the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Al Kharsaah, an 800 MW solar power project in Qatar, is now fully operational and connected to the grid. It is the third-largest solar power station in the world and the largest photovoltaic project ever built using a tracking system and bifacial modules. The plant is located 80 kilometers west of the capital Doha.

The Qatar National Vision 2030 mentions it as the country’s first non-fossil fuel power plant. Qatar wants to use this project to advance the production of sustainable energy and raise environmental awareness. Al Kharsaah, which has an installed capacity of 800MWp and can supply 10% of Qatar’s peak energy needs while preventing 26 million tonnes of CO2 emissions throughout its lifetime, is a significant supporter of Qatar’s pledge to host a carbon-neutral World Cup.

Numerous local and international media outlets have taken note of the project due to its notoriety, with an emphasis on environmental friendliness in both cases. PowerChina insists on using an environmentally friendly building method as the project’s principal contractor. Additionally, it establishes a framework for the conservation and recycling of energy resources, resulting in an effective and ecologically friendly energy-building site. It also comes up with specific relocation plans for native animals and plants on the construction site.

Saad al-Kaabi, the State Minister for Energy of Qatar, made the following statement during the commissioning ceremony: “Al Kharsaah Solar Power Plant is Qatar’s first non-fossil fuel power station.” It provides a fantastic model for the growth of Qatar’s new energy sector and has enabled the Qatari government to fulfill a significant commitment by hosting a Green World Cup.

The Al Kharsaah solar power plant is a crucial step for Qatar in its transition to a sustainable energy industry because it not only supplies clean energy for the upcoming Qatar World Cup but also creates a sustainable path for the country’s energy transformation and economic diversification.
