International solar cell and module manufacturing maker JA Solar has signed an agreement with AMEA Power, a UAE-based power developer. The firm has joined hands with a consortium consisting of China Energy Engineering Group, China Energy International Group and Zhejiang Thermal Power Construction aimed at the supply of integrated solutions for gigawatt-scale wind and photovoltaic (PV) projects that AMEA is implementing. These projects include the Kom Ombo Abydos project based in Egypt. The said project will boast of a capacity of 560 MW, and upon completion, will be the largest single PV project in Egypt. JA Solar will be looking into providing high-efficiency DeepBlue 3.0 Pro modules for the project. The establishment of the project began in January 2023 and will be completed within 19 months.

JA Solar claims that the new generation modules offers higher conversion efficiency (21.7%), greater power generation capacity, and promises high reliability.

The Kom Ombo Abydos PV project in Egypt is developed, owned and operated by AMEA Power. The funding for it is being provided by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank (FMO). Following completion, it will be set to supply clean electricity to almost a million Egyptian citizens.

At present, traditional fossil energy is still the dominant form in the energy system of Egypt, making up about 90% of the total. The country looks to increase the share of renewable energy and has set a goal to augment electricity from it to 42% by 2035.

Yang Aiqing, Board Member and Rotating Chairman of JA Solar, commented, “It is an honor for JA Solar to participate in the construction of the Kom Ombo Abydos project to make PV energy accessible and affordable for local residents. Africa _it has low access to electricity, but is abundant in sunlight and is uniquely positioned to develop solar energy. To enable more people to access efficient and reliable green electricity, JA Solar has actively promoted the development of African PV market. Since its founding, JA Solar has established the corporate mission of “developing solar energy for the benefit of the entire human race. It is committed and will constantly seek to promote the development of photovoltaic technology and its application worldwide.”

Recently, JA Solar announced that it had leased space for its first manufacturing facility in the US in Phoenix of Arizona. Attracting an investment of $60 million, the new facility will produce high-efficiency solar PV modules for commercial and residential rooftop applications, as well as for utility-scale solar power plants deployment. The annual production capacity of the factory will be 2 GW once it is fully functional.
