In 2024, Jordan will finalise a new long-term energy strategy that will target new projects in order to boost renewable power production and build green hydrogen power plants. This was revealed by a Jordanian official in a statement, recently.

“The strategy, which has been in the pipeline for some time, generally aims to develop the energy sector in the Arab country and identity future needs,” said Amani Azzam, Secretary General of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry.

“We are conducting studies for the development of the energy sector and expansion of smart power networks. We expect to finish a new energy strategy at the end of 2024,” she said.

Azzam said the new strategy focuses on new projects including expansion of power storage, increasing renewable energy in power generation and the introduction of hydrogen in electricity production.

“The strategy will also give attention to upgrading power consumption efficiency in various sector. We aim to attain a reliable and sustainable energy sector,” she said.

“The contribution of renewable energy to Jordan’s total energy mix witnessed a remarkable increase from 1 per cent in 2013 to 29 per cent in 2023,” said CEO of the Jordan Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fund (JREEEF) Rasmi Hamzeh.

Recently, during green energy science, held in collaboration with the Jordanian Engineers Association (JEA) and the German-Jordanian University (GJU), Hamzeh highlighted the Kingdom’s remarkable progress in adopting renewable energy.

As per local reports, JREEEF’s has completed JD5 million energy efficiency project in Petra city, which lowered the city’s energy costs between 40 and 60 per cent.

Also, similar projects to improve renewable energy use in 12 hotels is underway in Aqaba. There are currently 16 ongoing renewable energy projects in Jordan, with a combined cost of JD 110 million, that will benefit over 1.5 million citizens in various sectors.
