APM Terminals Bahrain, which operates Khalifa Bin Salman Port, has been named one of the top 10 transport and logistics companies in the Middle East for sustainability.

The company is working to make Khalifa Bin Salman Port the first fully solar-powered seaport in the region by the end of 2024. The solar power project will include over 25,000 solar panels, covering an area of 71,000 square meters. This installation is expected to generate 18.6 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity each year, contributing to the company’s goal of reducing its environmental impact.

The ranking comes from the 2024 Forbes Middle East Sustainability Leaders list and highlights the company’s work on lowering emissions and promoting sustainable practices in Bahrain and beyond. APM Terminals Bahrain states that this solar power project aligns with Bahrain’s national renewable energy objectives and the wider carbon-neutral commitment made by Bahrain’s leadership. This includes goals set by Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. Bahrain aims to reduce national emissions by 30% by 2035 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2060.

This initiative is part of APM Terminals’ global decarbonization strategy. The solar installation is intended to decrease the port’s reliance on non-renewable energy sources and contribute to regional sustainability goals in line with Bahrain’s vision for a more environmentally friendly future.

The Forbes Middle East Sustainability Leaders Summit, chaired by the UAE Minister of Trade, focused on advancing social well-being, environmental sustainability, and development goals.
