Bahrain’s Ministry of Electricity and Water Affairs (MEWA) has taken strides towards bolstering its renewable energy infrastructure with the launch of a comprehensive solar power and Electric Vehicle (EV) charging project. The initiative, overseen by the Ministry of Information, has garnered notable attention, drawing bids from five prominent companies.

According to a notice from the Bahrain Tender Board, the bidders and their respective tariff rates are as follows:

1.Yusuf Bin Ahmed Kanoo: BHD 0.022 or USD 0.058 / kWh (accepted with condition)

2. Alpha Energy Generations Co.: BHD 0.021 or USD 0.056 / kWh

3. Micro Centre: BHD 0.022 or USD 0.058 / kWh

4. Yellow Door Energy Projects Co.: BHD 0.022 or USD 0.061 / kWh

5. Siraj Power Contracting: BHD 0.025 or USD 0.066 / kWh (suspended)

This initiative marks a significant step forward in Bahrain’s renewable energy goals, inviting bids for solar projects aimed at promoting sustainable energy practices and facilitating the adoption of electric vehicles. The project, outlined in the Request for Proposals tender, aims to deploy grid-tied solar photovoltaic (PV) power plants across building rooftops and car parks, alongside the installation of EV charging stations at the Ministry of Information premises.

The Build-Own-Operate-Maintain (BOOM) contract, spanning a duration of 20 years, underscores the long-term vision for renewable energy development in the region. By engaging private sector expertise in the development and operation of these facilities, Bahrain seeks to optimize efficiency and innovation in its renewable energy transition.

The bidding process, initiated on October 19, 2023, culminated in the bid opening on February 15, 2024. The bidders vying for the project were mandated to demonstrate a proven track record in commissioning grid-tied solar PV projects, with specific criteria emphasizing project diversity and capacity within the past five years.

The competitive tariff rates quoted by the bidding companies reflect not only their financial propositions but also their commitment to advancing Bahrain’s renewable energy objectives. The selection process, though rigorous, signifies a strategic partnership between public and private entities in driving sustainable development and economic growth.

Overall, the project represents a pivotal milestone in Bahrain’s journey towards a greener and more resilient energy landscape. By embracing solar energy generation and facilitating EV infrastructure deployment, Bahrain positions itself as a regional leader in sustainable development and climate action.
