OQ Alternative Energy from Oman has signed an agreement with Kuwait-based Naqaa Sustainable Energy. The agreement covers new wind energy projects in three areas in Oman-Duqm, Mahout, and Sadah. These locations are in the Dhofar and Al Wusta governorates.
The planned wind projects are expected to generate up to 1,100 megawatts (MW) of electricity. The turbines for these projects will be made in Oman by Mawarid Turbine, a new factory being built in Duqm.
The deal was signed by Saeed bin Mohammed al Masoudi, Chairman of OQ Alternative Energy, and Mustafa bin Mohammed al Hinai, CEO of Naqaa Sustainable Energy.
This project is part of Oman’s broader energy development plan. It supports the country’s interest in using local resources to generate electricity. In April 2025, OQ signed a separate memorandum with Mawarid Company to establish the new turbine factory in Duqm. This factory will produce wind turbines for both Oman and nearby countries.
Aside from this project, Oman is also developing smaller renewable energy efforts. In the Al Batinah region, a 3 MW solar farm supplies electricity to a nearby agricultural zone. Another 2.5 MW solar project in Ibra supports local businesses and homes. Both are managed by OQ subsidiaries.
In Kuwait, smaller solar and wind projects are under way as well. A 5 MW rooftop solar pilot project is being tested on government buildings in Jahra. The pilot includes smart meters to track power savings. In Al Wafra, a 1 MW solar plant powers a local greenhouse farm that grows vegetables for domestic use.
This partnership between Oman and Kuwait adds more wind capacity to the region. The use of locally made turbines may also support new industries and job creation in Oman.
