Morocco is in talks with companies from the UAE to set up new wind farms. These projects would be in Morocco’s southern provinces, including parts of Western Sahara. Morocco wants more clean energy and plans to reach 52 percent renewables in its total energy mix by 2030.
Reports say Morocco is speaking with Masdar, AMEA Power, and Taqa. All three firms have renewable energy projects in other countries too. If these talks work out, the new wind farms could cost between $8 billion and $10 billion. They could bring in about 5,000 megawatts of extra wind power.
There are already some wind farms in that part of Morocco. One is at Tarfaya with 300 megawatts. Another is Aftissat with 200 megawatts. There is also Laayoune with 50 megawatts and Akhfenir with 200 megawatts. More wind stations are also planned. Boujdour could add 300 megawatts, and Tiskrad could add 100 megawatts.
The UAE also keeps working on its own small projects. In Dubai, some schools use rooftop solar panels. Some of these give 20 kilowatts to help cut electricity bills. In Sharjah, farmers are testing small solar pumps. These use about 15 kilowatts to move water for crops.
In South Africa, a small solar project helps a rural school run lights and computers when there is no power. This solar system makes about 50 kilowatts. Near Cape Town, a youth project put up five small wind turbines. Each turbine makes about 2 kilowatts. They help homes with basic power needs.
These smaller projects show how communities use clean energy in different ways. These new wind farms could help Morocco get closer to its clean energy target and add new jobs too.
