Nama Power and Water Procurement Company, Oman has named the companies that can move forward in developing two new gas-fired power stations. These are the Misfah and Duqm Independent Power Projects, located in the Muscat and Al Wusta regions, Oman respectively.
The Misfah plant is planned to generate up to 1,600 megawatts of electricity. Duqm’s plant will provide around 800 megawatts. Together, the two facilities are expected to deliver 2,400 megawatts of capacity to Oman’s electricity network. Commercial operations for both projects are planned to begin by the second quarter of 2029.
PWP intends to develop both plants as combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) facilities. The development will be carried out under a Build, Own, and Operate (BOO) model with private sector participation. Both plants will be connected to the Main Interconnected System (MIS), the national electricity grid.
The list of companies pre-qualified to bid includes ACWA Power Company, Korea Western Power Co. Ltd., Marubeni Corporation, Nebras Power, Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd., Shenzhen Energy Group, and Sumitomo Corporation.
In December 2024, PWP issued an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the two projects. These IPPs are intended to support the Sultanate’s long-term power supply planning.
Apart from these two major projects, Oman is also working on smaller initiatives. In Dhofar, the 50 MW Harweel wind farm, developed earlier by the Rural Areas Electricity Company (Tanweer), continues to provide renewable energy to remote areas. This plant operates with 13 turbines and supplies electricity to the grid operated by the Dhofar Power System.
Additionally, pilot rooftop solar programs have been implemented in selected government buildings in the Al Batinah region. These systems range from 30 to 100 kilowatts (kW) and are designed to study the impact of distributed generation on the national grid. The solar pilot projects are being monitored by the Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR).
