The EDF Group-led consortium’s endeavor to develop a large-scale green ammonia project in Oman represents a transformative leap towards sustainable energy production within the region. Through a comprehensive approach, the consortium plans to harness 4.5 gigawatts of wind and solar capacity, complemented by battery storage, and 2.5 gigawatts of electrolyzer capacity for hydrogen production. This integrated infrastructure aims to drive the transition towards renewable energy sources while facilitating the production of green ammonia.

Situated within the Salalah Free Zone and spread on an extensive area of 341 square kilometers, the project holds the potential to annually produce one million tonnes of ammonia, significantly contributing to Oman’s renewable energy targets. The agreements forged between Hydrogen Oman SPC and the consortium, granting exclusive rights for development, operation, and maintenance over a 47-year period, underscore the commitment to sustainable energy practices and long-term collaboration.

Oman’s strategic geographical positioning between major green hydrogen demand centers in Europe and Asia further enhances the project’s significance. Minister Salim bin Nasse Al Aufi’s acknowledgment of Oman’s favorable natural resources, investor-friendly policies, and progressive energy transition strategies underscores the country’s readiness to embrace and capitalize on the burgeoning green energy market.

This initiative not only signifies Oman’s commitment to sustainable development but also its emergence as a pivotal player in the global green energy landscape. By leveraging its abundant renewable resources and conducive regulatory environment, Oman is poised to establish itself as a hub for green hydrogen production, catering to the escalating demand for clean energy solutions worldwide.

The EDF Group-led consortium’s green ammonia project in Oman represents a significant milestone in the journey towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious energy future, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change and reduce carbon emissions.
