ADNOC, Masdar, and Microsoft have released a joint report titled “Powering Possible: AI and Energy for a Sustainable Future,” examining how artificial intelligence (AI) can support the global energy sector’s transition toward renewable and low-emission sources. The report discusses AI’s potential to improve energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and drive innovations in renewable energy.

The report surveyed over 400 experts in energy, technology, AI, academia, and finance.  Participants included UAE Minister of State for AI Omar Al Alama, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, and TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanné. The survey revealed that 92% of energy sector executives expect AI to significantly improve energy efficiency by 2030. Furthermore, 97% of respondents foresee AI as central to new energy solutions by 2050.

AI is highlighted in the report for its ability to reduce methane emissions. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, traps heat far more effectively than carbon dioxide. The report suggests that advanced AI tools could detect methane leaks with 20% more accuracy compared to older technologies. This improvement is essential for achieving the Global Methane Pledge, a target to reduce methane emissions by 30% by 2030.

The findings were shared ahead of the ENACT Majlis, a meeting in Abu Dhabi with 60 industry leaders in technology, energy, and finance. The event, convened by UAE Minister of Industry and ADNOC CEO Sultan Al Jaber, is intended to explore solutions for the sustainable growth of AI in the energy sector.

Microsoft President Brad Smith noted that AI’s growth would require a balanced approach, addressing AI’s energy demands while expanding renewable energy sources. According to Smith, “the goal is to increase carbon-free energy production and use AI to enhance energy distribution and access”.
