The Renewables business vertical of L&T has won a major order to develop three Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects for a notable client in the Middle East.  The three projects will collectively contribute 6 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of storage capacity.

In a press release, L&T said that the projects feature a 4-hour Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) each, capable of storing and dispatching energy to support grid stability and renewable energy integration. This leads to advancement in grid modernisation and renewable energy integration across the Middle East.

L&T Renewable & Storage Segement Grows

Since Larsen & Toubro (L&T) carved out a separate renewable energy vertical  in 2024 within its infrastructure segment, it has seen rapid growth in its renewable energy and energy storage business. The company created a separate business vertical for renewable EPC operations out of its Power Transmission and Distribution (PT&D) business.

L&T with effect from 1st September 2024, has created the Renewable EPC business, as an addition to its construction verticals. The move comes at a time when the division has been growing fast, and winning multiple new businesses in the Middle East in particular. This enable the firm to access to green financing for projects, besides the possibility of bringing in partners in the space will be easier with the hive off.

Additionally, the latest announcement builds on the previous projects won by L&T in the Middle East. According to its integerated report, L&T has developed a 2.5 GWp solar PV and 10 GWh BESS EPC order in the UAE, a 1.2 GWp solar and 1 GWh BESS EPC order in the CIS, a 3.5 GWp solar plant EPC order in KSA, and a 0.7 GWp solar and 45 MWh BESS project.

Other commissioned projects in the Middle East by L&T include 3.7 GWp of completed solar plants in KSA, a 0.7 GWp solar project with 57 MWh BESS across India, 1 GWp of solar plants in the UAE, and another 2.6 GWp of solar PV plants in KSA.

Project Details

The project will enable effective energy shifting, allowing surplus clean energy generated during off-peak periods to be stored and delivered during peak demand hours. The advanced BESS solution will incorporate liquid cooling technology, ensuring higher power density, enhanced safety and extended operational life. In addition to the storage facilities, the scope of the packages also involves grid interconnections, including pooling substations and underground cables.

Such projects entail stringent requirements with respect to plant performance, workforce mobilisation, safety, quality and timelines. The order stands as a testament to the enduring trust and confidence that clients place in L&T, backed by its proven engineering excellence and project management expertise.
