The UAE Ministry of Defense has completed a solar energy project at two district cooling plants in Abu Dhabi. The project was carried out in partnership with Tabreed and Emerge. Emerge is a joint venture between Masdar and France’s EDF Group. The partnership agreement was signed in March 2024. Under this agreement, solar photovoltaic (PV) plants were installed to operate for 25 years. About 4,000 solar panels were installed. These panels generate 2.4 megawatts (MW) of electricity. The power is used to run thermal energy storage systems and chilled water pumps at the district cooling sites. The energy from the…

Egypt is adding a large battery to store solar energy from its Kom Ombo plant in Aswan. The project is being developed by AMEA Power and supported with funding from the International Finance Corporation, or IFC. A total of $72 million in financing is being provided to help build and install a 300 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system. The Kom Ombo solar plant, which began operating in November 2024, has a capacity of 500 megawatts AC. The battery is expected to start full operations in July 2025. Once active, it will store solar electricity that can be used when the…
Hive Hydrogen South Africa has finished work on a large solar setup in the Northern Cape. This solar group, or “cluster,” will power part of a green ammonia plant in Coega, located in the Eastern Cape. The solar power project includes nine sites and can generate up to 1,430 megawatts (MW) of electricity. That’s nearly enough to power over a million homes. This power will supply about 40% of the energy needed to run the Coega Green Ammonia facility, which will make ammonia using solar and wind energy, seawater, and air. The ammonia plant is expected to produce over one…
Larsen & Toubro (L&T), a construction and engineering company based in India, has shared details of new projects in the Middle East and India through its Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) division. According to the company, its PT&D unit has received contracts to design and build multiple substations in the Middle East. These substations will operate at 220 kilovolts (kV) and 132 kV. The projects will use gas-insulated switchgear and will be delivered on a turnkey basis. L&T did not specify the exact countries but noted that the orders were placed by regional transmission owners and operators. In India, L&T…
A new solar power plant in Duqm, Oman, will use solar trackers made by a U.S. company. GameChange Solar will supply the moving racks that help panels follow the sun. The system is called Genius Tracker 1P. It will be used on a 450 megawatt-peak (MWp) solar project. This plant is part of a larger green fuel development by ACME Greentech Ventures. The solar power will run equipment that makes green ammonia and hydrogen. The full site for the Duqm solar project covers 92 square kilometers. The first part of the facility is already under construction. It plans to make…
Ducab, a UAE-based cable and wire company, is increasing its focus on recycling and local sourcing of raw materials. This comes as demand rises for metals like copper and silver, which are used in clean energy systems. Speaking at the World Utilities Congress in Abu Dhabi, Shailendra Pratap Singh from Ducab said copper demand could double in five to ten years. He said that “supply from countries like Chile, Peru, and the Democratic Republic of Congo may face issues.” These include political risk and climate-related disruptions. Singh said copper prices are expected to rise. He referred to a forecast from…
Dubai’s AMEA Power and Japan’s Kyuden International have signed an agreement. The two companies plan to work together on energy projects. These projects will focus on renewables and green hydrogen. The signing took place recently. It sets up a way for both sides to explore and develop clean energy solutions in different countries. AMEA Power has projects in solar and wind with about 2,600 megawatts already in operation or being build with additional 6 GW planned across different countries. Kyuden International is part of the Kyuden Group, a major energy company in Japan. The group brings technical experience and global…
Egypt is preparing to grow its renewable power capacity. By 2035, the installed renewable capacity is projected to reach 31.6 gigawatts (GW). This is based on a new market outlook report published by GlobalData. The report says that “from 2024 to 2035, Egypt’s renewable capacity is expected to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20.4%.” During the same period, renewable electricity generation is expected to grow at a CAGR of 19.4%, reaching 88.9 terawatt-hours (TWh) per year by 2035. The government of Egypt has set a target to generate 42% of its electricity from renewable sources by…
Alterra, a climate investment fund established by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2023, has announced a new investment in Europe. The fund is putting $50 million into Absolute Energy, an Italian renewable energy company. The money will help support 1.4 gigawatts of solar and battery storage projects in Italy. This is Alterra’s third direct equity investment. It comes after earlier deals with Evren in India and Neoen in France, both valued at $100 million. The current deal is being made alongside U.S.-based infrastructure company I Squared Capital. The new projects are expected to reduce emissions by about 380,000 tonnes…
