A Stepping Stone for Offshore Wind Sector in Azerbaijan

Masdar, SOCAR Green, and ACWA Power have signed an agreement to develop 3.5 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind energy in the Caspian Sea. These will be the first offshore wind farms in Azerbaijan.

The planned 3.5 GW capacity has the potential to provide electricity for millions of homes. Offshore wind energy uses large turbines installed in ocean or sea waters to generate electricity from wind. This type of energy generation is known for its high efficiency due to stronger and more consistent winds at sea compared to land-based wind farms.

This project is part of Azerbaijan’s strategy to expand its renewable energy sources. The country aims to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and reach net-zero emissions by 2050. Offshore wind is expected to add to the country’s existing renewable energy projects.

Masdar and SOCAR Green are already working on other renewable projects in Azerbaijan. These include solar power plants such as the 230MW Garadagh plant, which plays a key role in clean energy generation. Additionally, the 315MW Neftchala and 445MW Bilasuvar solar plants, developed jointly by Masdar and SOCAR Green, highlight ongoing efforts to diversify energy sources in the country. ACWA Power, a partner in the MoU, is also involved in the 240MW Khizi-Absheron wind power plant.

The new offshore wind farms will diversify Azerbaijan’s energy sources. Offshore wind production does not require land, making it suitable for increasing energy output without affecting urban or agricultural areas.

This project is expected to enhance energy generation and support Azerbaijan’s renewable energy goals. The collaboration between Masdar, SOCAR Green, and ACWA Power will focus on utilizing the available resources in the Caspian Sea for renewable energy development.
