The Australian Government has approved 10 new renewable energy and battery projects for Western Australia. These projects collectively deliver around 1.886 gigawatts (GW) of new renewable electricity generation and about 3.683 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of standalone battery storage capacity. The projects will add generation and storage to the state’s Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM), helping keep power reliable as older generators retire and electricity demand grows.
The Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy has awarded Tenders 5 and 6 under the Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS). These projects will add generation and storage to the state’s Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM), helping keep power reliable as older generators retire and electricity demand grows.
These 10 projects are expected to produce enough electricity to supply more than one million Western Australian households. They are also expected to support peak demand for more than 400,000 households for up to four hours and support more than 7,000 jobs during construction.
Moreover, they are expected to support more than 500 operations and maintenance (O&M) jobs each year over their lifetime. Developers have also made commitments to local communities, First Nations participation, and Australian-made materials.
Successful projects
Under Tender 5, renewable generation will be supported through six wind farm projects and one solar-plus-storage project. Under the Solar and BESS segment, Trina Solar won a Killawarra Hybrid Project that offered a 350 MW Solar and a 2,100 MWh BESS capacity at a Killawarra Hybrid Project

Under Tender 6, Australia has also awarded dispatchable capacity to the Collie Battery and Solar Hybrid Project (200 MW / 1,518 MWh), operated by Enpowered & Plenary Group in Palmer. Australia also awarded the Yathroo Battery (200 MW / 1,600 MWh), operated by Neoen Australia in Mimegarra. Additionally, the Waroona Renewable Energy Project – Stage 1 (82 MW / 565 MWh) is operated by Frontier Energy in Wagerup.
