Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has awarded the contract award for the 1.5 gigawatts (AC) Al Ajban Solar PV Independent Power Project. The project, entrusted to an international consortium comprising EDF Renewables, Korea Western Power Company (KOWEPO), and Masdar, was formally recognized at the World Future Energy Summit. The signing ceremony, attended by prominent dignitaries including HE Dr Sultan Al Jaber and Luc Rémont, marks a pivotal moment in the UAE’s pursuit of sustainable energy solutions.

On EDF Renewables & other companies securing the project, Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, lauded the project’s significance in propelling the nation towards a greener, more sustainable future. Hamad Al Hammadi, Chairman of EWEC, emphasized the UAE’s unwavering dedication to decarbonizing the energy sector and accelerating the transition to renewable technologies. Luc Rémont, Chairman and CEO of EDF Group, expressed gratitude for EWEC’s collaborative approach in realizing the Al Ajban Solar PV plant, emphasizing its role in combatting climate change.

With the financial close expected by Q3 2024, the Al Ajban Solar PV project signifies a significant milestone in Abu Dhabi’s energy transition journey, supporting the ambitious goals outlined in the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 and the UAE Net Zero by 2050 initiative. EWEC’s ambitious plans aim to provide over 50% of Abu Dhabi’s electricity from renewable sources by 2030, with substantial additions of solar PV capacity projected annually between 2027 and 2037.
