EGA to Build Region’s First Renewable-Powered Data Centers

Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has announced the construction of the region’s inaugural 100% renewable energy powered industrial data centres at its Jebel Ali and Al Taweelah sites.

This strategic move not only signifies a remarkable milestone for the United Arab Emirates’ industrial landscape but also demonstrates EGA’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.

The establishment of these cutting-edge data centres will revolutionize EGA’s operations, enabling the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation solutions at the core of its industrial processes. By leveraging real-time AI-optimized power and cooling management alongside the latest computer infrastructure, EGA anticipates a substantial 50% reduction in its total IT energy consumption.

The project is being implemented in collaboration with local technology provider Scientechnic and the EGA’s digital roadmap is expected to reshape its operations through the adoption of Industry 4.0 principles and broader digital transformation. The data centres, built to the Uptime Institute’s Tier III standard, will bolster the resilience of EGA’s computing infrastructure while aligning with global benchmarks for data centre efficiency.

EGA’s CEO Abdulnasser Bin Kalban stressed upon the company’s commitment to sustainability and added, “The construction of these state-of-the-art data centres exemplifies EGA’s endeavor to foster a thriving manufacturing innovation ecosystem in the UAE.”

Carlo K Nizam, EGA’s Chief Digital Officer, also emphasized on the pivotal role of the new data centres in enhancing the resilience and sustainability of the company’s digital manufacturing platform. With a focus on data-intensive AI and advanced automation solutions, EGA aims to realize its vision of self-optimizing, AI-driven plant operations.

Further, EGA’s collaboration with Microsoft UAE has seen the migration of two-thirds of its server and applications infrastructure to the Microsoft Azure Hybrid Cloud. This hybrid cloud model, endorsed by the UAE Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology’s Industry 4.0 Champions Network, significantly augments EGA’s data processing capacity while optimizing costs.

With its target towards innovation and sustainability, EGA continues to reinforce its position as a global leader in aluminium production while championing the UAE’s transition towards a knowledge-based economy.
