GS Inima has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the Barka 5 Photovoltaic (PV) Plant in Oman. The plant will have an installed capacity of 6.5 megawatts peak (MWp). It will supply around 11% of the electricity needed by the Barka 5 desalination facility until June 2044. Construction is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2026.

GS Inima developed the project in collaboration with Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (NPWP) and other government entities. The PV plant aims to reduce the environmental impact of desalination by using renewable energy.

Oman has several renewable energy projects in different sectors. The Ibri II Solar Power Plant, with a capacity of 500 MW, is one of the largest solar projects in the country. It supplies electricity to the national grid. The Amin Solar Plant, with a capacity of 100 MW, provides power to Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) operations.

Apart from large projects, Oman has smaller renewable energy initiatives. The Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) has installed solar panels on campus, generating 2 MW of electricity for educational facilities. The Royal Oman Police has set up solar-powered streetlights in remote areas to improve energy efficiency.

Oman’s Ministry of Education has introduced solar energy in some schools. Several public schools in Al Batinah and Dhofar have installed small-scale solar systems to reduce reliance on the main grid.

The Oman Water and Wastewater Services Company (OWWSC) is testing floating solar panels at reservoirs. The pilot project at Wadi Dayqah Dam has an initial capacity of 5 MW and aims to reduce water evaporation while producing electricity.

The Oman Airports Management Company has also integrated solar energy into airport operations. Muscat International Airport has installed rooftop solar panels, contributing to power needs within airport facilities.
